Review #8 – Howard G Magic Stick

Wrapper: Cameroon
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Purchased: Yesterday at a B&M shop

Overall impressions: V-cut. Good balance between the sweetness and nutty flavors of the wrapper and the more full-bodied Nicaraguan innards. Interestingly, the wrapper seems not to be as fragile as many of the Cameroon wrappers, as it does not crack or split at any point. In the first third, the earthiness is more dominant, but by the middle third, the cinnamon and earthiness are more in balance. Above average pepper on the retrohale, especially since it does not show much pepper on the palate. However, it is not unpleasant and sinus burning. The aroma is rather pleasant as well. I can see this pairing well with a good rum instead of today’s midday coffee pairing . The closing third sees the spiciness still present, along with the underlying Nicaraguan potency and a bit more of a cedar note. Mostly, it is a pretty consistent flavor profile and medium-full body throughout. Dense, creamy smoke and a rock solid burn line throughout. The ash holds for the most part, but it is quite flaky when it does fall. Overall construction is quite good. Quite enjoyable if you like Nicaraguan cigars. This cigar is not widely distributed as some, but it is available at several outlets, including several online stores.

Where does it rank in the Cameroon hierarchy: Not superlative or outstanding, but somewhat above average. I would assign it a very respectable 8.0 / 10.

Would I smoke it again? Certainly so.
